Advanced learning and executive-function development for gifted, twice-exceptional (2E), 2E+, multi-exceptional, and neurodivergent learners.

See the whole learner

Does This Sound Like Your Child?

Brilliant ideas.

Missing assignments.

Advanced reasoning.

Difficulty getting started.

Knows exactly what they want to say.

Cannot organize it on paper.

Capable of extraordinary work.

Inconsistent output.

Understands the material.

Cannot reliably manage the process.

Parents constantly reminding, organizing, checking, and monitoring.

Teachers repeatedly saying:

“They have so much potential.”

The problem may not be ability.

The missing piece may be the system between ability and performance.

How Can a Gifted Child Struggle in School? Understanding the Gap Between Ability and Performance

Instruction starts with understanding

IGNITE Is Not Traditional Tutoring.

Traditional tutoring often begins with a subject: math, reading, writing, or homework.

IGNITE begins with the learner.

We ask

  • What does this learner understand?
  • Where does the learning process begin to break down?
  • What executive systems are missing or unreliable?
  • What academic skills need explicit development?
  • What level of intellectual challenge does this learner actually need?
  • What systems will eventually allow the learner to manage increasingly complex work independently?

IGNITE develops those systems through the learner’s real academic life, not as abstract exercises disconnected from school.

Why Can Gifted, 2E, and 2E+ Learners Struggle With Executive Function?

The IGNITE process

From Potential to Performance

Exceptional learners frequently do not need adults to think for them. They need the invisible processes between thinking and successful execution made visible, teachable, and repeatable.

  1. Know
  2. Plan
  3. Start
  4. Execute
  5. Monitor
  6. Adjust
  7. Finish
  8. Reflect

IGNITE explicitly teaches those processes.

The LEX framework

Knowing. Processing. Producing.

01

Knowing

What does the learner actually understand?

02

Processing

What cognitive and executive systems are required to organize, manage, and act on that understanding?

03

Producing

Can the learner translate understanding into completed academic output?

“Where between understanding and output is the process breaking down?”

The three-year IGNITE arc

A Three-Year Path Toward Independence

IGNITE is intentionally developmental. The goal is not permanent dependence on a coach. The goal is progressively greater ownership by the learner.

Year 01Foundation

We Build the System.

Student focus

  • Organization
  • Task initiation
  • Follow-through
  • Routines
  • Managing real schoolwork
  • Early self-awareness
  • Foundational self-management

Coach role

High guidance. The Master Educator models strategies, externalizes processes, and helps establish reliable systems.

Parent role

Active collaboration. Parents receive progress communication and learn how the developing system works.

Year 02Ownership

The Learner Begins Running the System.

Student focus

  • Greater ownership
  • Explicit executive-function instruction
  • Planning
  • Self-monitoring
  • Strategic problem solving
  • Increasing independent practice

Coach role

Gradual release. The educator increasingly shifts from directing to coaching.

Parent role

Targeted partnership. Parents move from active support toward targeted partnership, learning how to motivate, recognize needs, and support growth without managing every task.

Year 03Release

The Learner Owns the System.

Student focus

  • Monitored independence
  • Self-management
  • Executive-function application
  • Academic output
  • Writing and word knowledge development
  • Self-advocacy
  • Independent strategy use

Coach role

Oversight. The educator monitors, refines, and confirms increasingly independent application.

Parent role

Partner rather than manager. The learner takes increasing responsibility, with the parent available as a partner.

The end goal is not a child who needs a better reminder.
The end goal is a learner who knows what to do when they get stuck.

The IGNITE learner

The IGNITE Mastery Wheel

Potential becomes agency as learners develop the capabilities to manage their own learning.

  1. Initiates

Begins tasks using learned systems rather than depending entirely on external activation.

  2. Organizes

Creates workable systems for materials, time, priorities, and ideas.

  3. Follows through

    Moves from intention to completion.

  4. Self-monitors

Recognizes progress, errors, barriers, and when a strategy is not working.

  5. Adapts

Changes strategies when circumstances or demands change.

  6. Advocates

Learns to communicate strengths, needs, questions, and appropriate support.

  7. Persists

Develops productive responses to challenge and frustration.

  8. Reflects

Understands how they learn and which strategies support them.

  9. Produces

Turns complex thinking into visible academic output.

  10. Acts with increasing independence

Gradually relies less on adults to manage the learning process.

IGNITE is not designed simply to produce better grades. It is designed to help exceptional learners become increasingly capable managers of their own learning.

The executive-function cliff

When Being Smart Stops Being Enough

Some exceptional learners compensate successfully for years, drawing on intelligence, memory, parent support, last-minute effort, or highly structured classrooms.

Then academic demands increase.

  • More teachers
  • More assignments
  • Long-term projects
  • More writing
  • More digital systems
  • More independence

Eventually intellectual ability alone can no longer compensate for executive demands.

At LEX Academy, we call this educational pattern the Executive-Function Cliff.

“The Executive-Function Cliff” is LEX educational language describing a pattern of increasing executive demands exceeding the learner’s existing compensation systems. It is not a medical or psychological diagnosis.

Why private 1:1?

Why Families Choose IGNITE Private

One learner.
One Master Educator.
One individualized pathway.

Full instructional attention

Every session centers on one learner’s profile, pace, school demands, and developing skills.

Responsive instruction

Scaffolding, pacing, strategy, and academic focus can change as the learner’s data and real-world performance change.

Relationship

A sustained educator-learner relationship creates the trust necessary for exceptional learners to take meaningful academic risks.

Continuity

The educator understands the learner’s history, strengths, friction points, strategies, and growth over time.

Individualization

The instructional relationship does not have to compromise around another student’s pace or needs.

Parents are part of the architecture

From Parent Manager to Parent Partner

Many families arrive at IGNITE exhausted.

Parents may be checking assignments, tracking deadlines, organizing backpacks, monitoring portals, reminding, re-reminding, negotiating homework, and functioning as the student’s external executive system.

IGNITE is not designed to make parents better permanent managers. It is designed to gradually reduce the learner’s dependence on that management.

  1. Parent manager
  2. Parent supporter
  3. Parent coaching partner
  4. Parent partner

The learner gains responsibility as the parent gains permission to step back.

Data-informed development

We Don’t Guess. We Observe, Measure, and Adjust.

  1. Observe
  2. Measure
  3. Teach
  4. Practice
  5. Adjust
  6. Measure again

IGNITE uses evidence from the learner’s actual work and developing strategies to inform instructional decisions.

  • Learner performance
  • Schoolwork
  • Work samples
  • Progress monitoring
  • Academic assessment information
  • Observed strategy use
  • Parent communication

Fit begins with a conversation

Who Is IGNITE Designed For?

  • Gifted learners whose academic performance does not consistently reflect their ability.
  • Twice-exceptional (2E) learners.
  • 2E+ and multi-exceptional learners with layered strengths and needs.
  • Learners with ADHD, autism, executive-function differences, writing/output challenges, or related learning differences when IGNITE is an appropriate educational fit.

Learners whose intelligence is being disrupted by disorganization, task-initiation difficulties, overwhelm, shutdown, inconsistent output, poor follow-through, or academic underperformance.

Families who want more than homework completion and want the learner to develop increasing independence.

IGNITE provides education and coaching. It does not diagnose or treat medical conditions. LEX uses 2E+ and multi-exceptional as whole-learner educational language, not additional diagnoses.

What Is a Twice-Exceptional Child?

The initial diagnostic

Start With Better Information

The initial year of IGNITE Private includes a comprehensive academic diagnostic evaluation conducted by a licensed diagnostician.

The resulting report helps the family and instructional team develop a clearer picture of the learner’s academic profile and can be shared with educators as appropriate.
