Academic coaching.
From understanding
to independence.

Academic coaching for the learner whose ideas, ability and everyday work do not always line up.

LEX connects explicit instruction in reading, writing and reasoning with the executive-function skills that help students start, organize and finish meaningful work.

Who this is for

See the strengths.
Find the barrier.
Teach the next skill.

Academic coaching may fit when your learner understands more than their written work shows, needs repeated reminders to begin, loses the thread of a multistep task, or has an uneven mix of advanced strengths and unfinished foundations.

It can also support a student who needs deeper challenge and a more purposeful way to learn. The starting point is the learner’s readiness, interests and present goal.

We welcome gifted, twice-exceptional, ADHD, autistic and other neurodivergent learners. At LEX, 2E+, Twice Exceptional Plus, describes our whole-person lens: strengths, learning differences, executive function, interests and lived experience are considered together. It is educational language, not a diagnosis.

What we can work on

Reading, writing and learning strategies for gifted and 2E students.

A plan may connect several areas. We select the highest-priority starting point with the learner and family.

01

Reading & language

Build comprehension, vocabulary, word analysis and the ability to explain a text using evidence. Instruction begins at the point where meaning or accuracy breaks down.

In practiceNotice a word pattern, explain an inference, support a conclusion.

02

Writing & academic output

Turn ideas into strong sentences, organized paragraphs and developed responses. Model planning, drafting and revision so the learner has a process they can repeat.

In practiceSay the idea, organize it, write it, check that it makes sense.

03

Reasoning & problem solving

Make thinking visible in reading, mathematics and unfamiliar tasks. Address relevant skill gaps, choose a strategy and explain why an answer works.

In practiceIdentify what is known, choose a method, explain and check.

04

Learning strategies & follow-through

Practice planning, task initiation, organization, self-monitoring and self-advocacy inside meaningful academic work. Adjust the support as independence develops.

In practiceName the first step, use a manageable plan, review the result.

The IGNITE approach

Make the thinking visible, then transfer ownership.

Support should give the learner a strategy they can recognize, practice and eventually choose for themselves.

Explore the IGNITE method
  1. 01

    Understand the starting point

Listen to the learner and family, review relevant work and identify what the student can already do, where they get stuck and which supports help.

  2. 02

    Set a clear, useful goal

Choose an observable target, such as organizing a written response or explaining a problem-solving method. Establish a starting sample and the support currently needed.

  3. 03

    Model, practice and reflect

Teach explicitly, think aloud and practice together. Use manageable steps, meaningful challenge and feedback the learner can act on.

  4. 04

    Review progress and adjust

Compare work over time, look for transfer to new tasks and adjust the instruction. Reduce prompts when the learner is ready while retaining useful supports.

What progress looks like

More than an assignment completed.

The goal is stronger academic work and a learner who better understands how to approach it. We look for evidence such as:

  • Clearer explanations, more accurate work and better use of evidence.
  • A student who can name the next step and use a workable plan.
  • Strategies used across tasks with less adult prompting.
  • More specific requests for help and more informed self-checking.

Work samples, the level of prompting and learner reflection help guide the next decision. Goals and pace vary by learner.

Choose the right level of support

One service, several ways to build a plan.

Academic coaching describes the work. Your program determines its scope and structure.

Questions families ask

A clearer starting point.

Can you help a child who explains ideas aloud but cannot get them onto paper?

Yes. Writing support can begin with oral rehearsal, a manageable plan and modeled sentences or paragraphs. We use work samples to identify whether the immediate barrier is organizing ideas, expressing them in writing, or managing the steps of the task.

Do you offer academic coaching for ADHD students who struggle with homework?

We welcome ADHD and other neurodivergent learners. Coaching can connect reading, writing or reasoning instruction with strategies for starting assignments, tracking the steps and checking finished work. If the main need is organization and follow-through rather than subject instruction, executive-function coaching may be a better starting point.

Can academic coaching support a gifted or twice-exceptional homeschool learner?

Families can discuss targeted instruction, appropriate challenge and learning strategies alongside their existing homeschool plan. LEX is Houston-based with remote support worldwide. The goals, delivery format and service fit are agreed before work begins; coaching does not replace a family’s complete homeschool curriculum.

How is academic coaching different from tutoring?

Tutoring commonly focuses on understanding subject content. LEX academic coaching includes explicit academic instruction and teaches the planning, organization, monitoring and self-advocacy needed to use that learning independently. The balance depends on the learner’s needs.

Does my child need a diagnosis or gifted identification?

No diagnosis or gifted identification is required to begin a conversation. We consider the learner’s strengths, current work, challenges and goals. Existing evaluation information can help inform a plan when relevant.

Can you use current schoolwork?

Yes. Current assignments can provide a useful place to model a strategy and practice it. We may also use carefully chosen tasks to teach a missing skill or offer appropriate challenge. The student remains the author of their work.

Is this only for students who are behind?

No. A learner may need greater academic challenge, support with one specific skill, or help showing what they already understand. Readiness and the individual goal guide the work.

Is an evaluation included?

Academic coaching uses instructional observations and work samples to guide teaching. A comprehensive diagnostic evaluation is a separate service or part of a specifically agreed program. Coaching does not diagnose or treat medical or psychological conditions.

What are the fees, schedule and format?

Scope, session length, frequency, delivery format, availability and fees are confirmed during consultation before a commitment. LEX is based in Houston and supports remote learners worldwide. The recommended arrangement depends on the learner’s goals and the appropriate program.
